The Short Version:
Emily Watts is a workaholic. She spends all her time writing freelance and keeping her fashion website, Zeeked, up to date and interesting. For that reason, she has lacked a bit of a social life of late. So when her long time musician friend, Jesse, invites her to a concert, she decides to make an appearance. That’s where she meets Cory, also a musician but in a famous Top 40 band! At first Emily is sceptical of the charming singer. She has learned from her friendship with Jesse that rock bands and lasting relationships don’t really go together, but she finds herself falling for the handsome musician anyways.
Emily never expected her life and relationship to become front page news on one of the hottest celebrity watch websites, but that is exactly what happens.
It’s all a bit overwhelming, but she can handle the attention; that is until her career starts to take a hit. When things start to get rocky with Cory, all the attention starts to damage her reputation as she fights off allegations of heart breaking and cheating.
Spoiler Alert!!
Cory soon starts to pull away from Emily, leaving her wondering what she did wrong. That’s when she turns to her friend Jesse for advice and comfort. But she soon learns that not everyone has good intentions in helping her. When pictures of her and Jesse together surface on the web, they make it look like their friendship is something more. Soon she is defending herself against accusations of being a heartbreaker and unfaithful. And when Emily finds out that Jesse’s unethically overzealous band manager is the to blame for setting up the photo shots with Jesse, she starts to realize that she needs to stop trusting everyone so blindly. Even Cory starts to cash in on the free publicity with a tell-all interview begging Emily to get back together with him, and publicly “forgiving” the photos with Jesse!
All the bad press finally takes its toll on Emily, and she decides to step up her game. She’s tired of being raked over the coals, and wants the world to see Cory and Jesse for the fame-whores they really are! She has learned a few things from them, and after some crafty planning she has Jesse on camera admitting his “guilt” and Cory eating out of her hand. The world finally gets the truth, care of that pesky celebrity website and her own candid interview with the sites writer!
Its justice at its finest when, as a result of her interview, her career takes a turn skyward, landing her a ton of work, a great hit rate on her own site, and a new feature on her new favourite celebrity paparazzi site!
How I see it:
So before I say anything, I have to admit that this is actually my second attempt at writing this review. Thanks to my tendency to forget to save, and my idiotic laptops tendency to auto-reboot, I lost three quarters of my first review. So needless to say I know have to try to remember all of the witty and clever things I wrote the first time around.
Now that said, I shouldn’t have to hard a time finding good things to say about this book. I found the more I read, the harder it was to put down. The story sucks you and makes you want to read until 3am just to find out what happens, and that’s saying something considering the last time I read a book until 3am was either cramming for a midterm, or finishing a term paper!
Now I want to take a minute to sing some praises to the author for being awesome too. Not only is this her debut novel, which is wicked, but she also writes other fiction and non-fiction, and is a successful web designer.
She also approaches life with a refreshingly positive approaching, choosing to grab life by the balls rather than letting it pass on by.
Her philosophy on life is actually one of the aspects she brought to the character Emily that I love most. It’s amazing and inspiring to see someone (even if they are fiction!) have a dream and work their butt off to achieve it.
Spoiler Alert!!
So, when I started this book I was looking forward to the “juicy” bits that usually come with the romance novels. I always used to think they were my favourite part and that I would really miss it in a “clean” book. This is one book that I actually didn’t even miss the naughty parts! By the end of the book I had completely forgotten that there hadn’t been any! The story all by itself was enough to really catch your interest and keep you entertained without having to resort to appealing to your libido!
Now one thing to know about me is I love a good triumph-over-adversity story, especially when it consists of someone beating someone else at his own game. Not only does Emily decide to be strong and stand up for herself, she manages to do it by turning the tables on those that took advantage of her. It almost makes you want to throw your fist up at the end and say “ya girl, way to go!”
It refreshing to have a female character that fights back a little dirty and takes control of her own destiny.
Read it or not?
Absolutely!! The book is wonderfully entertaining, engaging and the characters are catchy! Just make sure you don’t have to be anywhere early the next morning because you just might find yourself reading into the wee hours of the morning! Don’t expect the trashy romance bits, but do expect to love the story enough to not even care that they are missing. And fully expect to be inspired to work harder and achieve more, and maybe even take a stand!
